Frequently asked questions
Can PrivaChat read my messages?
No. PrivaChat uses end-to-end encryption. Your messages are encrypted on your device before they are sent and can only be decrypted by the intended recipient. The server only ever receives ciphertext it cannot read.
This is not a policy promise — it is a mathematical property of the encryption design. Even if compelled by law, we have no ability to produce the plaintext content of your messages.
What happens if I forget my password?
You can reset your password via the Forgot password? link on the login screen. A reset link will be sent to your registered email address.
Important: because your private encryption keys are derived from your password, resetting your password generates a new keypair. Messages sent to you before the reset cannot be decrypted after it. This is an unavoidable consequence of zero-knowledge encryption — we cannot recover your old keys any more than you can.
Can I use PrivaChat on multiple devices?
Yes. On each new device, sign in with your email and password. A fresh encryption keypair is generated for that device and your public key is updated on the server so other users can encrypt to your new key.
Note that messages encrypted to a previous device's key are not readable on the new device — encryption is per-device by design.
What platforms does PrivaChat support?
PrivaChat is available on:
• iOS (iPhone and iPad)
• macOS
• Web browser at app.privachat.io (Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
Android support is on the roadmap.
How do private channels work?
When a user creates a channel, a random AES-256 key is generated on their device. Only users who are explicitly approved can join. When a member approves a join request, they encrypt the channel key to the requester's public key — the server only ever passes the ciphertext, never the key itself.
This means even if the server were compromised, the channel key would not be exposed.
Is PrivaChat free?
Yes, PrivaChat is currently free to use. There are no ads and no data monetisation — the service is funded directly.
How do I delete my account?
To request account deletion, email support@privachat.io from your registered address with the subject line "Delete my account". We will process the request within 5 business days and confirm by email when complete.
Account deletion removes your email, handle, and public keys from the server. Because messages are end-to-end encrypted and not stored in plaintext, there is no message content to delete.
How do I report a bug or security issue?
For general bugs or feature requests, email support@privachat.io.
For security vulnerabilities, please email security@privachat.io directly with details. Please do not disclose security issues publicly until we have had the opportunity to address them.
